Making the youth of our society aware of the benefits of a healthy and balanced diet, that’s a challenge which DSR has set its heart on tackling.
By serving more than 6,000 meals a day in school and university canteens throughout Switzerland, DSR has the responsibility of motivating the young generation to change its consumption habits and to consider the importance of good food hygiene.
This is an ambitious role, but several measures already started by our company should quickly bear fruit. Here are a few examples :
The ‘Green Fork’ label, the guarantee of eating a balanced meal.
Virtually all the school for which DSR is privileged to prepare meals have the Junior Green Fork label. This nutritional approach consists of filling half of one’s plate with vegetables, a third with starchy foods (pasta, potatoes, rice etc.) and the remaining part with proteins (meat, fish, egg), while having a minimum of fat. This means that the body is provided with all the energy needs it requires for balanced growth.
Discovering new foods
Eating properly means eating a variety of foods. The DSR cooks apply this basic principle daily when designing their menus under the supervision of our dietician. Thus, they endeavour to help the very youngest discover local products which have gradually disappeared from the shop displays. By always taking a playful approach, they involve the suppliers in introducing the children to these foods that are vital for our body. It’s a good way of encouraging the youngsters to try out new foods.
Cooperation with the teaching staff and the parents
To have the maximum chance of success also requires the involvement of parents and teachers in the action initiated by DSR. Thus, several times a year, culinary activities are organised in the school restaurants by our kitchen teams. By focusing on a specific culinary theme for a few days, DSR gives parents and teachers a chance to discover the benefits of a particular product, by means of an educational folder. By revealing a few practical tips, DSR encourages the parents to replicate the principles of a balanced diet in a simple way at home.
